Ceylon, the colonial name for the island of Sri Lanka, is the third largest tea producing area in the world. Tea production began in the 1870's after a fungus wiped out most of the Islands coffee crop.

The variety of Ceylon teas offers the serious tea drinker an adventure in subtle differences of taste. The tea generally has a crisp citrus aroma and can be divided into high, medium and low grown. High grown teas are of the finest quality.

The main production from Ceylon is black tea. It can be picked throughout the year but the finest pickings occur in February to March and in August to September.
