China has the earliest records of tea drinking, dating back to the 1st Millennium BC. For a long time tea was used as herbal medication. It was not until the Tang dynasty (618-907 A.D.) that tea as a drink became popular. In 1610 tea arrived in Europe via the European traders, encouraging tea to become an international drink.
