Health Benefits |
| You may enjoy tea just for it's taste, but there are also many great health benefits associated with this simple drink. It is the processing (fermentation) of tea that leads to differences in the final end product, affecting the taste, caffeine content and health benefits. Green teas are not fermented like oolong and black teas, but are steamed or pan fired immediately after picking. Because green tea is the least processed of all teas the concentrations of minerals and the all important antioxidants are higher than other teas. Hence green teas are higher in antioxidants. |
| Antioxidants and Body Cell Protection
So what does tea contains that makes it so good? You have all probably heard of antioxidants. These are substannces which are found naturally in the body, as well as in plants such as fruits and vegetables. Tea contains a high number of these antioxidants and the fresher the leaves the higher the concentration.
But why are they important? Well during the normal functioning of the body, cells produce by-products called free radicals, which can be damaging compounds. They are highly unstable and can cause damage to other cells within the body.
Antioxidants help reduce the damage that the free radicals cause within the body by stabilizing the free radical. |
| Caffeine Content Caffeine works as a stimulant and helps prevent fatigue but it also acts as a diuretic, and so there is a recommended daily limit of 300mg. Caffeine in tea acts as a mild stimulant and therefore results in an increased activity of digestive juices. If you are worried about your caffeine intake, it is advisable to consider drinking the paler green and oolong teas. Tea contains considerably less caffeine then coffee. Black tea contains approximately a third less caffeine than a cup of coffee and green and white tea contains even less. Rooibos contains no caffeine. |
| Fluid Intake Your recommended daily intake of water is around 2.5L. Tea counts to your daily fluid intake. Unlike coffee, it has a low caffeine content and therefore less pronounced diuretic effect. |
| Weight Loss Tea drunk on its own, without milk or sugar has virtually zero calories. There are reports that tea might be implicated in fat metabolism and therefore possibly assist in weight reduction. The leaves of tea are thought to be thermogenic. Thermogenic properties of any substance implies that the body will metabolize fat more rapidly, without increasing the heart rate. |
| Other benefits
Various reports have indicated tea may have wider benefits. It is believed that tea possibly has cardiovascular protective properties, including the possible ability to help reduce blood lipids. |
| Summary Four cups of tea a day is believed to contribute to a healthy lifestyle! Tea is authentic and natural. Drinking tea has the added health benefits, such as the presence of antioxidants, which help keep a healthy balance within the body, by mopping up damaging free radicals. It hydrates the body and tea without milk has virtually zero calories. Tea has many benefits in summer and warm climates. It is fantastic at cooling the body and providing the sensation of relaxation. And after all, sharing a pot of tea is very pleasureable and companionable. |
